When a business pays for managed IT services, support tickets are only the visible part of the work. Systems still need monitoring, updates installed, backups checked, employee access managed and security alerts reviewed.

In our experience, much of this work happens before employees know there is a problem. Managed IT is about maintaining the environment throughout the month, not only responding when technology fails.

WHAT MANAGED IT HANDLES EACH MONTH a network of IT provider setup

What Is Being Monitored and Maintained?

Alpha’s managed IT services include 24/7 monitoring across network infrastructure, firewalls, cloud and onsite servers, computers, internet circuits, email systems and websites.

During a typical month, managed IT may involve:

  • reviewing network, server and firewall alerts;
  • identifying internet or service outages;
  • reviewing malware and endpoint-security alerts;
  • confirming required patches installed successfully;
  • checking hardware or storage warnings; and
  • following up when managed devices stop reporting.

Monitoring only provides value when alerts are reviewed and acted on.

How Are Users and Backups Managed?

Employee changes create ongoing IT work.

A managed IT provider may handle:

  • new-user accounts and email;
  • computer and application setup;
  • file and system permissions;
  • access changes when employees move roles; and
  • account removal and data protection when employees leave.

Backups also require regular review.

Check:

  • failed backup jobs;
  • systems included in the backup plan;
  • storage or backup alerts; and
  • whether important data can actually be restored.

A successful backup notification does not prove recovery will work.

Who Handles Technology Vendors?

Some IT problems involve outside providers such as an ISP, software company or hardware manufacturer.

A managed IT provider can:

  • identify which vendor needs to be involved;
  • gather the technical details;
  • open the support case;
  • communicate with the vendor; and
  • follow the issue through resolution.

This is especially useful when the problem could come from the software, internet connection, server or local network.

Questions to Ask Your Managed IT Provider

Leadership should be able to get clear answers to questions such as:

  • Which systems required attention this month?
  • Did any backups or patches fail?
  • Were security alerts investigated?
  • Were employee permissions added or removed?
  • Are recurring vendor or hardware issues still unresolved?
  • What should we plan or budget for next?

What Good Managed IT Should Give You

A quiet month does not mean nothing happened.

Good managed IT means routine maintenance, security, backups, user changes and technology issues are being handled without requiring the owner to manage each one personally.

The result should be fewer surprises and a clearer picture of the condition of your business technology.
